During this internal examination, we examine the size, nature and shape of your prostate. The prostate is examined internally via the anus and visualised using ultrasound. This exam is often combined with a blood test (PSA test).
Why do I need this exam?
The combination of a rectal examination, an internal ultrasound and a PSA test allows us to detect or rule out various abnormalities of the prostate.
What will we do?
The examination is performed by a urological nursing specialist or nurse practitioner under the supervision of a urologist.
The employee will feel your prostate via the anus. In medical terms, this is known as a rectal examination. Next is the ultrasound examination, for which the employee will position an ultrasound probe several centimetres into your anus (rectum). This exam is known as a transrectal ultrasound. The employee can examine your prostate on a monitor and the urologist can review the images at a later date. If necessary, we will take a sample of your blood before or after the other exams to assess your blood's PSA value (Prostate-Specific Antigen). This allows us to measure the prostate's activity in the blood.
Duration of the exam
The exam will take circa 25 minutes in total. Our employee takes plenty of time for preparation and exam, so the client will feel as comfortabel as possible during the examination.
Make an appointment
You only have to schedule an appointment for the exam itself. If it is deemed necessary to also collect a sample of your blood, an appointment for blood sampling will be made right then and there. In most cases, you will not have to wait (long) for this.
How soon can you see me?
