For a stool test (also known as a faecal examination), a sample of your stool is examined in the laboratory. Your stool is tested for the presence of substances that may explain your complaints. These can include pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites or other substances.
Why do I need this exam?
A stool test is generally performed in cases of suspected gastroenteric infection. Indication for chronic intestinal inflammation such as Crohn's disease can be examined by determining the amount of calprotectin in your stool. It is also possible to determine if you have any blood in your stool. Your general practitioner will explain their reason for ordering this test for you.
Collect stool
For this exam, your physician has given you an order form and a bag. It contains more information about how to collect a stool sample. Read the instructions carefully before you begin. This bag contains a purple collection bag that you must hang in your toilet and a wooden spatula that you can use to fill half of the sterile jar with your stool. Place the sticker with your personal information on the sample jar. It is important to drop off the jar containing your stool sample as quickly as possible; preferably that same day, but no later than twenty-four hours after collecting the sample. You can visit any of our locations for this and do not need an appointment.
The results
You will not receive the results of the test right away. Our cardiologist will examine the registered activity of your heart and send their report and recommendations to your general practitioner or physician. Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner or nurse practitioner to discuss your results. You can also check the results of your exam in the MijnDiagnostiekvoorU client portal. You are free to choose whether you want to look at your results before discussing them with your caregiver. It is possible that your healthcare provider has not yet received a full report because part of the results of your examination(s) are not yet available.
