STD stands for “sexually transmitted disease.” In other words, an STD is a disease that you can contract by having (unprotected) sex. An STD examination is performed to diagnose or rule out an STD. You can collect the necessary biological material yourself and drop it off at one of our locations. We will examine the material in our laboratory.
Why do I need this exam?
Your general practitioner wants to test you for a sexually transmitted disease, such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and/or mycoplasma genitalium. If a STD is not treated quickly enough, it can have serious consequences (e.g. infertility). An STD will not go away on its own. If an STD is diagnosed in a timely manner, it will generally be easily treatable.
Collecting material
For this exam, your physician has given you an order form and a bag. This bag contains a cotton swab, a small tube filled with fluid and instructions. Please read the instructions carefully and in their entirety before you begin. You can drop off your collected sample at any of our locations during our standard opening hours.
The results
The results of your STD examination will be available in a couple of days - often the very next day. We will send the results of your examination to your general practitioner. Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner or nurse practitioner to discuss your results. You can also check the results of your exam in the MijnDiagnostiekvoorU client portal. You are free to choose whether you want to look at your results before discussing them with your caregiver. It is possible that your healthcare provider has not yet received a full report because part of the results of your examination(s) are not yet available.
