A physician can submit skin biopsies, skin excisions or small tissue samples for histological examination (tissue examination).
Why do I need this exam?
Your general practitioner wants to have a sample of your tissue, e.g. a skin abnormality, examined. Your general practitioner will collect a small tissue sample for this or remove the abnormality itself. They will then send this tissue sample to the laboratory.
What will we do?
At the pathology laboratory, the tissue sample is processed and stained. The tissue sample is examined under a microscope to look for inflammatory or malignant cells. Sometimes, additional staining of the tissue sample is required.
Sample collection
For histological examinations, your general practitioner will use a special jar to collect your tissue sample. This jar is then placed in a bag. The bag is collected from your general practitioner's office, but they may also ask you to drop the bag off yourself at one of the locations of Diagnostiek voor U. In that case, it is important to drop off the bag containing the jar with your tissue sample as soon as possible at one of our locations near you - preferably that same day. You do not need an appointment for this.
The results
We will send the results of your examination to your general practitioner. Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner or nurse practitioner to discuss your results. You can also check the results of your exam in the MijnDiagnostiekvoorU client portal. You are free to choose whether you want to look at your results before discussing them with your caregiver. It is possible that your healthcare provider has not yet received a full report because part of the results of your examination(s) are not yet available.
Tissue samples and storage period
If your attending physician has sent your tissue sample or cells to the pathology laboratory for pathological examination, residual material will be stored afterwards.
