Resting ECG (electrocardiogram)

Resting ECG (electrocardiogram)

An ECG (resting electrocardiogram) is an electrocardiogram that produces a graphical visualisation of the electrical signals in your heart while you are lying down.

Why do I need this exam?

The heart is a hollow muscle that contracts under the influence of small electrical impulses. These impulses can be visualised with an ECG machine. An ECG provides information about your heart rhythm, possible damage to your heart and the possible enlargement of your heart.

What will we do?

To perform this exam, we will attach electrodes to your chest. We will also place electrodes on your shoulders and iliac crest. The wires coming out of the electrodes are attached to a device that records the electrical activity of your heart.

Duration of the exam

The exam will take circa 15 minutes in total.
