During a cervical smear, your general practitioner will take a small sample of cells from your cervix to check for the presence of abnormal cells.
Why do I need this exam?
If you have any gynaecological complaints, your general practitioner can perform a cervical smear (medical indication). These are cervical smears that are not performed as part of the Dutch Cervical Screening Programme.
What will we do?
In the pathology laboratory, the cervical cells are stained and examined under a microscope. With a microscope, it is possible to see if the cells contain any abnormalities. If necessary, the cells can also be checked for the presence of the virus that causes cervical cancer: the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Cervical smear
Your general practitioner will place your cell sample in a special jar. This jar is then placed in a bag. The bag is collected from your general practitioner's office, but they may also ask you to drop the bag off yourself at one of the locations of Diagnostiek voor U. In that case, it is important to drop off the bag containing the jar with your cell sample as soon as possible (that same day) at one of our locations near you. You can visit any of our locations to drop off the bag and do not need an appointment for this.
The results
We will send the results of your examination to your general practitioner. Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner or nurse practitioner to discuss your results.
You can also check the results of your exam in the MijnDiagnostiekvoorU client portal. You are free to choose whether you want to look at your results before discussing them with your caregiver.
Tissue samples and storage period
If your attending physician has sent your tissue sample or cells to the pathology laboratory for pathological examination, residual material will be stored afterwards.
