During a cardiac ultrasound exam, we use ultrasonic sound waves to assess the function of your heart.
Why do I need this exam?
This exam can be used to assess the structure of your heart, its pumping function, the function of the valves and even the flow of your blood. We will also perform an electrocardiogram to measure the electrical signals in your heart. Taken together, these tests provide a good overview of how your heart functions.
What will we do?
Electrodes will be placed on your torso to make an electrocardiogram and measure your heart rhythm. During a cardiac ultrasound, the sonographer will place a transducer (a device that produces ultrasonic sound waves) on the skin of your chest. Your body will reflect these sound waves. The reflected sound waves are then translated into a visual representation of your heart. This makes it possible to visualise abnormalities affecting your heart of blood vessels. The sound waves are harmless and painless.
Duration of the exam
The exam takes circa thirty minutes, which includes making an electrocardiogram and the time it takes you to dress and undress.
