Ultrasound neck/thyroid

Ultrasound neck/thyroid

For this exam, we use sound waves to detect or better visualise possible abnormalities of the tissues in your neck and/or thyroid.

Why do I need this exam?

This ultrasound exam gives us more information about your (para)thyroid gland and lymph nodes, which are located in the neck region.

What will we do

During a radiological ultrasound, we generate sound waves with a transducer (a device that transmits and receives sound waves). These sound waves are inaudible. We press the transducer against your skin, which sends the sound waves into your body. The organs and tissues in your body reflect the sound waves. The reflected sound waves are then visualised on a monitor. They are also recorded and stored digitally.

Your neck must be bare for this exam. If you wear a necklace, we will ask you to take it off. You can then lie down on your back on the examination table. The physician will apply a bit of gel to your neck. This gel prevents air getting trapped between your skin and the device that transmits and receives the sound waves. The physician will move the device across your neck and watch the images on a monitor. One of our radiologists will review and assess the images at a later date. This exam is entirely painless.

Duration of the exam

The exam will take circa 10 minutes in total.

The results

We will send the results of your examination to your general practitioner. Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner or nurse practitioner to discuss your results.

You can also check the results of your exam in the MijnDiagnostiekvoorU client portal. You are free to choose whether you want to look at your results before discussing them with your caregiver.
